The Danger of the Single Story: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

This is the story of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a Nigerian Novelist, on being Middle Class, living in a Colonised Country. In this video she tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a finding ourselves in a critical misunderstanding. She sees the stories of people's lives, cultures, to be partially extended beyond reason when told.
It is amazing how many times people have asked me if we live on trees, mingle with giraffes in our communities and eat in the jungle. I think it will take one's life travelling around the world to at least grasp an idea of what the world really looks like.
I especially liked the point she made that "single stories rob people of their dignity and make the recognition of our equal humanity difficult, it emphasis on how we are different rather than how we are similar". It is therefore undeniable that stories are materials that can be used to empower, humanize and to repair our broken dignity. Click here to Watch the video.
